Round 9 – Results / Match Report

The last round of the season was the Whistler Cup. It was the second time the last round has
been hosted by the West Coast Saints up at Whistler and once again the day was a huge
success. The Saints set up a great day of football and celebrations after the games in the
village.
Unfortunately for the Cougars they were unable to reproduce early season form and they went
down for the second game in a row. The saints proved the more suited to the small field and
they took home the Whistler Cup by 3 goals.
It was a game dominated by stoppages and the Cougars couldn’t really produce any flowing
play. The saints managed to produce and convert more opportunities in the first half and they
led by 5 goals by the major break. The Cougars clawed their way back into the game in the third
quarter as they had the advantage of a significant tail wind. However, the two goal difference at
the last break was enough for the Saints to hold on to.
The game decided the Doug Vargo trophy for the highest goal scorer of the year for the
Cougars. Brad ‘Jorgo’ Jorgensen had to make up on the 4 goal advantage that Bredan ‘Noddy’
Davis had set earlier in the year before his departure. Unfortunately for Jorgo he was unable
to make up the difference and could only score 2 of the required 4 goals. Congrats to Noddy for finishing the season on 19 goals!
The Cougars still managed to hold on to the top of the table and will play against the Delta
Bayhawks on the 21st of August for a spot in the Grand Final. The Saints and Eagles will fight
for their chance to play the loser of the other game.
The game between the Cougars and Saints was also Cathal O’Loughlin last game as he heads
off to try the American life style in San Francisco. Cathal’s departure is another major loss for
BC Footy, who contributed on and off the field for the last few years for the Cougars, Harps and
Saints. Best of luck mate!

Round 5 – Results / Match Report
Round 5 for the cougars was the second clash of the year against the West Coast Saints. The game started and remained very physical throughout, which resulted in a lower scoring game than the cougars’ first 4 rounds. Noddy helped the Cougars to a 2 goal lead at quarter time with his agility proving too much for the Saints defensemen as he managed to turn 2 Saints player inside-out before running in to drill a goal.
However, the Saints’ intensity matched the Cougars for the second and third quarter as the difference between the sides did not change from the 2 goals at the end of the first quarter. The Cougars’ veterans, Hoppy and Baz, were once again instrumental in the success of the team in the middle and up forward – Baz taking his standard 10 plus marks and Hop having a lazy 30 possessions. Newcomers to the team this year also made important contributions across the centre, with Nick and Simon both contributing important majors.
The Cougars afterburner in the 4th quarter, quite reminiscent of the Geelong Football club this year, was once again the difference between the teams. The fresh legs of the Cougars produced all the run in the first 10 minutes of the last quarter as they piled on multiple unanswered goals. While Danny Cravino’s set shot goal from 40 out and his distinctive celebratory “Go Cougars!” inspired the whole team, it was Ash Steier’s 2nd quarter goal from the half forward flank that defined the difference between the sides on the day.
Ash had a mark too far out to kick for goal, but rolling with the momentum and energy on the Cougars side he played-on to the boundary side of his opponent and drilled a low drop punt catching Saints backmen unawares and flat-footed. The ball bounced through the posts for the goal of the game.
Final scores:
VAFC – 13-6-84
WSAFC – 8-5-54
Goal scorers:
3 – Brendan Davis, Brian Kelly
2 – Craig Hopkins, Ashley Steier
1 – Nick Phibbs, Danny Cravino, Simon Berry
The early game saw the Eagles beat the Bayhawks:
Eagles – 13-11-89
Bayhawks – 7-10-52

Round 4 – Summary – Cougars: 16-11-107 def Bayhawks 10-5-65
A top of the table clash down at Langley saw the Cougars bring home the points versus the Bayhawks to remain on top of the BCAFL table. The game was an intense match from the outset with the Bayhawks kicking 3 of the first 4 goals to hold a several goal lead at 1/4 time.
Ash Steier was moved up to full forward which resulted in several goals for himself and other teammates. This allowed the Cougars to take a 6 point lead into the main break despite the Rock of Gibraltar like effort from Jared Hart in defense for the Bayhawks. Leon Grams played his first game of the year after battling with a groin injury, and was stellar off the half back during the quarter for the Cougars.
The third quarter saw the Cougars extend the lead, only to have the Bayhawks pile on 3 quick goals to level the scores. Arch appeared to shrug off his hangover for the 2nd half and began winning the ruck hitouts along with tackling everyone within his 10 foot wingspan. Matty Harrison snapped a beautiful goal late to put the Cougars back up by 6 points which was the margin at 3/4 time.
The Cougars went on the apply great pressure in the last quarter which resulted in several turnovers by the Bayhawks. Patty Macvey’s confidence just grows every week as he did his best by providing fantastic run off the half back flank for the Bayhawks. However everything that went into their forward line, was rebounded by the forever youthful Tony Cooper. Coach Jorgensen bobbed his head up to kick two cheap goals to give the Cougars a little breathing space. A Bayhawks player was then sent off for disciplinary reasons. This allowed the Cougars to make full use of the man advantage and kick the final few goals of the match. Of these goals, Captain Bozza just went bang to kick another long range goal from 50m, and Chris Harrison was accurate in his set shot after the siren for his first goal for the Cougars.
On another note, Cougars centre half back Graeme Davy returned from a groin injury, only to pull his hamstring and continue his unlucky run of injuries. First gamer’s Mac Fairbairn and Stephen Reny both showed their potential with a couple of a touches each and a near goal or two.
Next week’s round 5 clash at Burnaby Lakes vs the Saints will be the last game for former Cougars captain and two time best and fairest winner Baz Kelly before he continues on his adventures around the world. Hopefully the Cougars can give him a winning send off!

Round 3 – Summary – Cougars: 17-10-112 def Eagles 8-7-55
Round 3 was the traditional Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) day clash between the founding clubs of BCAFL (Vancouver Cougars and Burnaby Eagles). The first game saw the Delta Bayhawks defeat the 2009 Premiers. This game was followed by the traditional ANZAC day service which was lead by the Cougars veteran James Warfe. A minute silence was held after playing of the last post for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and for our way of life. This also happened to be Warfey’s last game in BCAFL as he and his fiancée Jacqui will be heading on a road trip around North America before heading back home to Melbourne. They will both be very much missed by the Cougars and we wish them both the best of luck for their adventures ahead.
After the short service, it was time for the much anticipated clash between the Cougars and the Eagles. Once again the Cougars started strongly with the centreline dominating and the forwards being as potent as ever. Captain Bozza Thomson managed the centre and kicked the goal of the quarter from long range. If we had a 50 m arc Bozza would have surely been outside it. A handy lead was taken into the first break but the second quarter saw the Eagles pull back the deficit slightly.
One of the highlights of the game was the Cougars second year Canadian Greg Tiffin slotting his first BCAFL goal. The ball was fired in quick to the full forward line after another clean tap from Arch to Krazy. Baz managed to get the ball to ground which was quickly whisked away by Greg and through for a goal. Other first career goal scorers on the day included Dave Marron, Neuman Mannas, Ben Cyphery and Stu Grills.
Once again it was accurate goal kicking that helped the Cougars to a healthy lead and there was no stopping them in the final quarter as they continued to extend that lead. Even Tony Cooper; who was named team of the century back pocket, managed to snag a goal. Great work boys!

Round 2 – Summary
The Cougars second round clash against the young Delta Bayhawks was a top of the table clash that would see only one team continue the unbeaten run for the 2010 season. The game started extremely well for the Cougars with one of the fastest BCAFL goals of all time – Baz taps to Matty Harrison, who kicks forward to find Brendan ‘Noddy’ Davis 30 metres out directly in front. Noddy went on to convert the set shot which would be his first of 4 goals for the day. This centreline domination continued for the majority of the first quarter with all Cougars midfielders racking up the stats.
The Delta team managed to restrict the Cougars through the middle in the 2nd and 3rd quarters as they used their young legs to produce many opportunities. Delta just lacked the ability to convert their many opportunities partly due to desperate defence by the likes of Ash Steier and Brenton Short. The ability to score goals was not lacking for the Cougars as they racked up the majors. In the end the score line didn’t reflect the closeness of the encounter, but it was clear that the Delta team has a lot of potential to improve.
Other multiple goal scorers included: Cathal Brugha – 2, Ben Vadasz – 2 and Michael Taylor – 2.
Cougars: 16-11-107
Bayhawks: 5-8-38
The first game of the day saw the saints beat the Eagles in a tighter game.

Round 1 – Results / Summary
Round 1 – Summary
The opening round for the season saw the Vancouver Cougars take on the West Coast Saints in the first game which was shortly followed by the Burnaby Eagles and the Delta Bayhawks. It was a clear but blustery day out at Langley for the first games of the season which made it hard for the early-season unpolished skills to get into groove.
Lorin ‘Bozza’ Thomson, the newly appointed captain for 2010, won the toss and took the wind for the first quarter which the Cougars could only capitalise with a one goal advantage after 20 minutes of play. The first half went in favour of the defensive lines as the conditions made it hard for mid-fielders from both teams to hit their targets. After 40 minutes of play only a couple points separated the sides.
The Cougars were, however, able to take advantage of the tail-wind in the third quarter with goals to Danny ‘goal sneak’ Cravino, Brad Jorgensen, Brendan Davis and Craig Hopkins. This premiership quarter effort ended up being enough of a buffer to hold off the Saints in the last thanks to determined defence from the whole team.
The highlight of the day though, came when coach Brad Jorgensen took an absolute hanger on Peter “The Stepladder” Campion’s shoulders midway through the third quarter. The mark was reenacted multiple times at the pub throughout the evening, with Scott Sheen claiming it was the best mark he’d seen in BC Footy throughout his 5 year service.
Other goal scorers for the Cougars included: Ben Vadasz and Darren Duff.
Cougars: 6-6-42
Saints: 4-7-31
Goals: Cravino, Vadasz, Jorgensen, Duff, Hopkins, Davis
In the second game the Bayhawks were too strong for the Eagles in another closely contested match.
