UBC – Sports fields witnessed round #1 games for the NWPAFL.
Wet conditions and bitterly cold weather made for unpleasant footy conditions but the rain held off and all the teams battled hard to offer some great first round footy given the circumstances.

Canadian pushes for call-up
Richard Hinds | March 16, 2009
THE impressive form of Canadian rookie Mike Pyke is way ahead of schedule and gives Sydney an unusual ruck quandary going into round one.
Pyke, who turns 25 on March 24, has performed well as a tap ruckman in the Swans’ final two practice matches, raising a prospect unthinkable even a month ago, that a man who earned a spot on the club’s list as an international rookie on the strength of a videotape of his rugby union exploits might become an instant AFL player.
With the retirement of Peter Everitt, none of the possible partners for ruckman Darren Jolly, including youngsters Jake Orreal and Daniel Currie, have made a strong claim for a permanent spot in the trial games.
“You look at it and you might not pick him just because he’s from Canada and he’s only been (training and playing) for four months,” Sydney coach Paul Roos said.
“But if you just look at it in pure football terms, on merit, then he has very strong claims.”
St. Patrick’s Day Gaelic Football Game CANCELLED
GAELIC GAME IS ONLY CANCELLED – TOO MUCH RAIN
We will be continuing the BC Footy tradition of having all teams march in the St. Patrick’s Day parade.
The parade attracts thousands of spectators, and is a great place to kick a few 50m bombs down Granville St and promote our sport.
Location: Downtown – Georgia and Broughton Street (new 2009 meeting spot).
Time: Sunday 15th March @ 10:45am (Parade starts at 11:30am)
All marchers will be wearing their affiliated footy jumpers and will be free to kick the footy as we walk – in front of around 125,000 people!
After the parade, we will be heading to Brockton Oval in Stanley Park for the traditional Irish vs Aussies game of Gaelic Football. The Irish beat the Aussies on Australia Day at AFL, so it’s time we turn the tables and beat them at their own game!
All are welcome, even if you haven’t played Gaelic Football before. It is very similar to AFL, just a little less contact and a different shaped ball.

Join the Cougars on Facebook!
We have a Facebook group with over 100 members.
It’s a great place to add the other guys on the team, and to keep informed of what is happening around the club and the league.
